BOGO, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Two Canadian men who took Viagra for erectile dysfunction have been cleared Monday by a court in Chicago.
The men, whose names have not been revealed, were given a warning by the Food and Drug Administration about the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in some people who used the drug for erectile dysfunction. The men had been on Viagra for about a year.
"The FDA is going to be concerned about the increased risk of cardiovascular events associated with sildenafil use," said a federal judge in Chicago who is reviewing the case.
The men, ages 19 to 41, were told they could take Viagra and the drug for five years, while the others were told to stay on the drug.
In April, the men were treated for erectile dysfunction, and in August, they filed a complaint with the FDA. A court in the state of British Columbia last year found that the men were not properly warned about the increased risks.
The two men have been cleared of all liability under the Food and Drug Administration's.
The men will face a maximum fine of $25,000. The maximum penalty for those who violate the rules is $5 million.
"It's a very serious matter for the FDA and other stakeholders," said the judge. "It's a very serious matter, and we're just going to keep doing what we can to help the people who have been hurt."
Viagra is a prescription drug and is taken by millions of people worldwide. It is sold under many brand names such as Cialis and Levitra.
The FDA says it can only prescribe Viagra under conditions of doctors supervision. The Food and Drug Administration does not have to follow the recommendations of the agency.
Viagra is the generic version of Cialis, and many people who use it have to take it on an as-needed basis or they could develop erectile dysfunction, which can be permanent.
If the men were given a warning about their increased risk of cardiovascular events, they could have an additional four months of Viagra to keep them from going back on their regular schedule.
The drug also is used to treat erectile dysfunction, which can be caused by a variety of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
For now, Viagra is only available with a doctor's prescription.
There are currently no Viagra side effects from taking the drug, although some people have reported feeling a little nauseated or having headaches. The men who have been given Viagra were not prescribed the drug.
However, some doctors are still looking for ways to avoid Viagra side effects.
A doctor would be needed to rule out other side effects, such as heart attacks or strokes.
The drug can only be sold under prescription under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner. The prescription is not needed, because the drug is available without a doctor's prescription.
The men's health care professionals who treat the men will determine whether they are qualified and willing to provide counseling and other care, including taking counseling about erectile dysfunction and taking Viagra.
The men will be referred to a physician who can prescribe the drug without a prescription and who will advise them on how to take the drug, the FDA said.
The men will not be allowed to use the drug or stop using it, even if they have a history of heart attacks or strokes. The men will also be asked to stop taking the drug for the rest of their lives.
The men will be asked to stop taking the drug for a maximum of six months and to give the doctor a list of the side effects they are taking.

It is not known whether Viagra Connect will become a treatment for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The erectile dysfunction drug was launched in Australia on 14 November 2017.
The product is now available in both prescription and over-the-counter.
